The majority of these events take place in an office, or in a classroom. The bulk of laptops that are stolen \u2013 over 90% of them \u2013 are never recovered. Obviously, a laptop is an essential asset to many of us, especially now that a lot of the workforce prefers to take their job with them on-the-go, so it\u2019s critical that we do our due diligence and protect our belongings. Can you insure a laptop?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Warranties do not usually include theft. TLDR; your laptop is typically covered as a part of your \u201cpersonal property\u201d component, contained within your homeowner\u2019s or renter\u2019s insurance. Still, there\u2019s some things you need to know; some restrictions, info, what is covered, etc. Let\u2019s dig in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-type-of-insurance-does-a-laptop-need\">What type of insurance does a laptop need?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Both renter\u2019s and homeowner\u2019s insurance will cover a laptop, as it\u2019s a part of your personal possessions. If your laptop is insured for the perils that are listed in your policy, that\u2019ll likely include things like vandalism and theft. So, if you\u2019re at the local caf\u00e9 doing some work and your laptop is swiped while you were taking a bathroom break, your insurance would cover you. A standard policy will also insure your laptop from physical perils such as the following:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Fire<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Lightning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Falling objects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Theft<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Vandalism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Windstorm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Freezing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Explosions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u2026and more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obviously, the extent of what your laptop is covered for depends on the finer details of your policy, who your insurer is, and any added coverage you\u2019ve purchased for an additional premium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note, however, that with any claim filed, you\u2019ll need to pay a deductible as a part of the replacement cost for your laptop. For things that are typically valued much higher than your average belonging, like bicycles, collectibles, engagement rings, you\u2019ll potentially be asked to purchase what\u2019s known as extra coverage or \u201cscheduled personal property.\u201d However, this may not apply to laptops as electronic items are deemed \u201cmore prone to accidental damages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to protect your laptop with your renter\u2019s or homeowner\u2019s insurance, great! All you need to do is get a policy and determine the overall value of your personal property. Walk around your apartment or home and take a video or document your belongings by whatever means \u2013 receipts, proof of purchase, warranties, etc. \u2013 and estimate its total cost. If you own a lot of high-value items, you may need to purchase an additional rider to cover all your personal property. If you\u2019re confused, don\u2019t worry! They\u2019ll cover things pertaining to manufacturer defect, like broken keyboards, failures in the hard drive, etc., but things pertaining to external losses, like if you dropped your laptop or if it was stolen \u2013 those wouldn\u2019t be covered. Accidental damage, according to warranties, is considered negligence, and won\u2019t be covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some manufacturers will offer protection plans, like Apple Devices. AppleCare+ can be purchased for an additional $379 and can be purchased within 60 days of buying your device. It offers three years of technical support, two incidents of accidental damage (which are subject to service fees), battery service, and service coverage. Unfortunately, this doesn\u2019t cover theft, and it\u2019s more expensive than your typical insurance. Renter\u2019s policies and homeowner\u2019s policies are cheap, and they\u2019ll offer coverage for much more than your laptop. Moreover, the majority of losses with laptops are theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-will-my-home-or-renter-s-insurance-cover-a-work-laptop\">Will my home or renter\u2019s insurance cover a work laptop?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What if you use your laptop for business purposes? Would your home or renter\u2019s policy cover it then? It depends \u2013 does your company hold you financially responsible for your electronic device?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re the one paying for your laptop, it could be that your insurance provider will have you covered if you should experience a loss. If your company is the one that\u2019s paying for your laptop, they\u2019ll likely have to file a claim through their own separate policy. It\u2019s a waste of your time and effort to do the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tips-for-protecting-your-laptop-and-mobile-devices\">Tips for protecting your laptop and mobile devices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Insurance is (obviously) a great added layer of protection, but it can\u2019t do anything to physically stop your laptop from being stolen. Your best bet is to prevent all risk of your laptop from being stolen, at all. Here are some steps to protect your devices:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Always physically secure your laptop. Ensure that is kept in a storage space which can be locked. If this is in an office or classroom, ensure you place it in a desk that is locked, a closet, etc. \u2013 and if the device can use a cable lock, secure it to a heavy object!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Some police departments offer engraving services\/laptop registration to increase the chance of identifying stolen equipment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Never leave your mobile device unattended.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Never store sensitive or confidential data on your mobile device or laptop unless you have received authorization to do so.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Always use a password \u2013 ideally two-factor authentication \u2013 to protect your devices against unauthorized usage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Turn your Bluetooth power off by default to prevent your device from being discoverable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">If your device or laptop is stolen, contact your local district police for assistance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obviously, things happen. When they do, it\u2019s better to be insured.
